BRACEY - Harry Paul Stough Jr., 86, of Tanglewood Shores in Bracey, Va., passed from this world to be with his wife Rachel in God's care on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007.
Harry was born June 23, 1921, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., to Harry P. Stough Sr. and Margaret Anna Pioth Stough. The oldest of five siblings, he graduated from Penn High School in 1939, enlisted in the U. S.
Army Air Corps, and was stationed at Langley Field, Va. He graduated from the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics as an aircraft and engine mechanic and then served a tour of duty of Newfoundland from December, 1941 to June, 1942. During the summer of 1942, Harry met his future wife, Rachel, at Buckroe Beach, Va. He entered the Aviation Cadets flight training program, completed flight training in 1943, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served a tour of duty with the 8th Air Force in the European Theater of Operations (ETO), piloting heavy bombers out of Chelveston, England. From May to October, 1944, he flew 50 combat missions, primarily in his B-17G, 'Rachel O,' named for his wife, the former Rachel O. Whitlow of Richmond, Va. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the ETO Ribbon with three battle stars, and the American Defense Medal.
Captain Stough separated from the Air Corps in 1946 and went to work at Minneapolis-Honeywell for 37 years, initially in their Richmond office, and later in their Philadelphia office. He was an engineer for the temperature control system on the luxury liner S. S. United States and represented Honeywell on the transatlantic record-setting maiden voyage in 1952. Harry was a Honeywell field engineer for the environmental control, test instrumentation, and recording systems during construction of the U. S. Navy Aeronautical Turbine Laboratory in West Trenton, N.J. In later years, as a control engineer, he served as the Building Automation Systems Specialist for Honeywell's Northeast Region. He had lived in Levittown, Pa., for 25 years prior to retiring with his wife to their home on Lake Gaston near Bracey in 1983. Harry was an outdoorsman, avid reader, and computer hobbyist. He enjoyed time with family and friends, and the company of others in spirited discussions. His true joys in life were his wife and his family.
