Obituary
John K. Coster, PhD, of Raleigh passed away this past Saturday at Springmoor Retirement Center. Dr. Coster led a life of nearly 92 years with humility, accomplishment and respect for everyone with whom he came in contact.
Born in Mooresville, IN, John was raised on a family farm during the Great Depression. He rose from humble roots to earn a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a masters and doctorate from Yale. His distinguished career included faculty positions at Purdue, the University of Nebraska, and 26 years at NC State University. Among his proudest accomplishments, however, was serving as an adjunct professor at NC A&T State University.
As a “man of the Church” John was extremely active in his faith. He served in leadership roles including President of the Baptist Student Foundation at Purdue, President of the Congregation of the Federated Church in West Lafayette, IN, Chairman of the Board of Deacons and the Session at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC, and served on the Older Adult Ministry Team at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC.
John was an active resident of the Springmoor Retirement Community. He served as the editor of the Springmoor Herald for many years and was a member of the Hotshots singing group. John loved to sing from his earliest days and his resonating bass found a home in his church choirs and in the Raleigh Oratorio Society.
John is survived by his two sisters, Mary Ellen Randall of Aiken, SC, and Ruth Colclesser of Speedway, IN, and by his two sons Charles and David, his daughter-in-law, Lisa and his three grandchildren he loved dearly: Davis, Kiley and Rees, all of Raleigh, NC. Uncle John was also treasured by his nieces and nephews and their families for his great devotion and involvement in their lives.
John was married to Dorothea Young (Dottie) Coster from 1944 until her death in 1954. John loved and admired her for her sweet spirit and the encouragement she provided.
John was married to Dorotha Kette (Dottie) Coster from 1956 until her death in 2004. John loved and admired her for her loyalty and commitment to her family and friends.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh at 4 pm. The family will receive visitors at the church from 2:30 pm until 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund at 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615 or to Greystone Baptist Church at 7509 Leadmine Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.
