Duane Pfander was born December 12, 1926, Conway, Iowa, to Cloyd and Neva (Whipple) Pfander. Horace died January 27, 2022, with family at his bedside, at Bedford Specialty Care, Bedford, Iowa.
Horace graduated from Sharpsburg (Iowa) High School in 1944. He helped work the family farm and also worked other jobs as well as joining the Army in April 1945. He served one tour of duty in Japan and was honorably discharged in December 1946. Horace was united into marriage to Betty Ann Strong on July 6, 1952, at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church. To this loving union were born three children, Nancy, Larry and Steven. The couple lived and raised their family in the Sharpsburg area until January 1965 when they moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Once in Colorado Horace worked a short time as a carpenter before going to work for a new business, Schneider Sand and Gravel in the Ft. Collins area while completing the construction of our new home. He worked long days as would work on the house before and after work and on the weekends. They moved into the home in July 1965. He later worked for Barker Enterprise as a machine operator and mechanic until he retired in 1991. Then Horace and Betty began to spend their winters in Alamo, TX. There they broadened their base of friends, meeting many from Taylor County for the first time. They enjoyed the numerous activities, card games, bingo, and country music jams. Horace put up the mail for the Alamo Recreational Vehicle Park for many years and readily volunteered for other activities.
Horace and Betty moved from Colorado to Bedford, Iowa, in 1993, continuing to spend the winters in Texas. Horace joined the Lions Club of Bedford and supervised the farming of his acreage nearby. Horace was very handy with motor vehicle and home repairs and had quite a collection of tools and other assorted odds and ends as you never knew when you might need something. His curiosity for how things worked or were put together continued into his nineties. He readily shared his tools and knowledge with friends and family.
Horace and Betty spent many a Saturday morning eating breakfast with long time friends, many of which also spent their winters in Alamo, TX. Horace cared lovingly for his wife, Betty, of 66 years before she died in 2018. Left to cherish Horace’s memory are his daughter, Nancy Pfander of Colorado Springs, CO, his son Larry Pfander of Palm Desert, CA; daughter-in-law, Donna(Pfander) Bane; grandchildren Bryan Pfander, Kerri Jo(Jason) Sargent and Megan(Robert) Gulley; great-grandchildren Camryn Pfander, Stevie Pfander, Lane Pfander, Brynlee Sargent and Susie Gulley; sisters Maxine Bates, Betty(Joe) Robertson, Berneice Allen, Eloise(Gary) Cunningham, as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
Preceding Horace in death are his wife, Betty, parents; son, Steven Pfander; grandson Kyle Powell; sister Lorna Hall and brother Melvin Pfander.
