Funeral services for Bernice M. (Hammond) Pekkanen, 86, of Mentor, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St., (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor.
Mrs. Pekkanen passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at Mentor Way Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mentor.
Born April 15, 1925, in California, Pa., she had been a resident of Lake County for 52 years, living in Mentor.
She loved to bowl, golf and walk. She also enjoyed reading.
Mrs. Pekkanen was a retired United States Postal employee and member of N.A.L.C.
She was the beloved wife of 54 years to Waino R. Pekkanen; loving mother of Lynn Leon May of St. Joseph, Mo., Diana G. Kutscher of Bruno, W.Va., and Paul W. Pekkanen of Brigham City, Utah; grandmother of Shelly Michney and Scotty M. L. Griffith; great-grandmother of Crystal, John Paul, Justin, Casey, Tevyn and Carter; great-great-grandmother of Brooklyn and Bentley; sister of Donald (Dorothy) Hammond; and aunt of many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Donna Pekkanen; parents, George and Florinda (Hepler) Hammond; and siblings, Vesta Cowen, Roy Hammond, Robert Hammond, Jessie Huber, John Hammond and Orvan Hammond.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in her name be made to the Salvation Army.
