Mary Lynch Bailey, M.D., age 91, died Friday, January 21, 2011, of Brentwood.

Born August 21, 1919, she was survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. William R. Bailey; mother of eight children, William R. (Barbara) Bailey of Quinton, VA, Mary L. Bailey, James L. Bailey, M.D. of Atlanta, GA, Kathleen (Kevin) Varley of Bethel Park, Patricia (Michael) Ward of Whitehall, Eleanor Bailey of Canonsburg, Margaret (Richard) Herrle of Phoenix, AZ and Thomas (Lillian) Bailey of Bethel Park. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of the late James A. Lynch and Mary Inez Finnerty of Pittsburgh.

Mary L. Bailey was preceded in death by three brothers, James Lynch, John Lynch and Jerome Lynch. Survived by one sister, Kathleen (Thomas) Myron of Bethel Park.

Mary graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1944. She did her residency at Mercy Hospital and subsequently worked with Dr. Jonas Salk on the polio vaccine; her proudest achievement after her family.

Obituary
Dr. William R. Bailey, Jr., age 93, was born Sept. 5, 1918 in Quinton, VA. He earned a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College. He earned his medical degree in 1942 from the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated as salutatorian. He did an internship at Norfolk General Hospital.

He served in the United States Army from 1943-46 and was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon his return from military service in the South Pacific and Korea and upon the encouragement of Dr. Mark Bracken, William came to Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh for his medical residency from 1946-49.

William served as Chief of the Cardiology Department from 1962 through 1974 and performed the first heart catheterization at Mercy Hospital. The Mullins/Bailey Cardiology Unit at Mercy Hospital was named in his honor. Before he retired from practice in 1990, William was welcomed into the McAuley Society.

A resident of Brentwood, PA, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dr. Mary Lynch Bailey.

He was the son of the late William R. Bailey, Sr. and Myrtle Anderson.

Friends will be received at the JOHN F.
