Dr. William R. Bailey, Jr., age 93, was born Sept. 5, 1918 in Quinton, VA. He earned a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College. He earned his medical degree in 1942 from the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated as salutatorian. He did an internship at Norfolk General Hospital.
He served in the United States Army from 1943-46 and was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon his return from military service in the South Pacific and Korea and upon the encouragement of Dr. Mark Bracken, William came to Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh for his medical residency from 1946-49.
William served as Chief of the Cardiology Department from 1962 through 1974 and performed the first heart catheterization at Mercy Hospital. The Mullins/Bailey Cardiology Unit at Mercy Hospital was named in his honor. Before he retired from practice in 1990, William was welcomed into the McAuley Society.
A resident of Brentwood, PA, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dr. Mary Lynch Bailey.
He was the son of the late William R. Bailey, Sr. and Myrtle Anderson.
Survived by eight children, William R. (Barbara) Bailey of Quinton, VA, Mary L. Bailey of Brentwood, James L. Bailey, M.D. of Atlanta, GA, Kathleen (Kevin) Varley of Bethel Park, Patricia (Michael) Ward of Whitehall, Eleanor Bailey of Bethel Park, Margaret (Richard) Herrle of Phoenix, AZ and Thomas (Lillian) Bailey of Bethel Park; also survived by 14 grandchildren, Katie B. Lipton, William R. Bailey, IV, Michael Bailey; Ryan, Erin, Matthew and Sean Varley, Patricia Sarah and Zach Ward; Danny, Nicholas and Stacey Herrle, Thomas and Mary Jo Bailey and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., (412-881-4100) 4201 Brownsville Rd., Brentwood 15227, Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Sylvester Church at 10 a.m. If desired, family suggests contributions to St. Sylvester School Fund, 3754 Brownsville Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15227.
