SEAFORD - Virginia Ludwig Mountcastle, 83, passed away peacefully in Boston, Mass., on All Saint's Day, Nov. 1, 2005. A Catholic Mass will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Saint Joan of Arc Parish in Yorktown, Va., where she was a member for more than 30 years. A short graveside service for the family will follow the Mass at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Mrs. Mountcastle was born in Denver, Colo., and was a former resident of Providence Forge, Va., and Newport News, Va. She was a resident of Seaford, Va., for 35 years. During World War II, she was a WAV in the United States Navy. In the 50s, Mrs. Mountcastle helped deliver babies, as a midwife, for many of the impoverished, many times in the middle of the night. She worked as the Head Nurse of the Intensive Care Unit at Riverside Hospital and did volunteer work for the Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, James Christian Mountcastle. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Mountcastle of Seaford, Va., Linda Mountcastle of Boston, Mass., and Janet Fleagle of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Robert Ludwig, and a sister, Jo Davis, both of West Minister, Colo.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of sending flowers, please make a donation in Mrs. Mountcastle's name to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Red Cross.
