Obituary
George McLeod Hodge, formerly of Providence Forge, Va., died October 2, 2002 at Louisa HealthCare Center. He was born January 31, 1907 to Anna Fann and John Robert Hodge in Alcolu, S.C. A sister, Etoile Grant of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two sons, George Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C. and John of Louise, Va.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive him. His wife of 65 years, the former Elizabeth Adams, his parents, five sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in education from Newberry College in 1930. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia in 1950. He began his 48-year education career as a math/science teacher at New Kent High School in 1930. He subsequently served as school principal in Bath, Highland and Campbell Counties, and as superintendent of schools in Charles City, New Kent and Dinwiddie Counties. He retired to Providence Forge in 1970. In retirement he was active in community and Masonic activities. He was instrumental, along with many others, in the creation of the Free Community Library for the Bi-County area that is now known as the Heritage Library. He received the Service to Mankind Award in 1986 from the Chickahominy Sertoma Club. He was a Charter member of the Monterey and New Kent Lions Club. He received the Melvin Jones Award for Lionism in 2001. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave. A graveside service will be held at Bethany Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Providence Forge Presbyterian Church, P.O.
