Obituary
Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - September 27, 2000
Grace Saxby Post, 104, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in Williamsburg.
Mrs. Post was an organist for 18 years at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. She worked at Colonial Williamsburg from 1953 to 1966 as a hostess at the Kings Arms Tavern. She once met the British Queen Mother while serving as hostess, her daughter, Dorothy Parsley, recalled.
Her musical career started early: Mrs. Post completed a handwritten personal history in 1993, in which she described her joy at age 7 in finding a toy piano under the Christmas tree, Mrs. Parsley said. She was already taking lessons from her sister, Minnie.
Mrs. Post was born in Porter, Wis., on June 20, 1896, to Edward Saxby and Carrie Ann Kocher. Her father was a tobacco farmer who, for health reasons, moved the family to Virginia when Mrs. Post was 8.
She was one of six children and the last surviving child.
She enjoyed traveling and raking the magnolia leaves in her yard into her early 90s, Mrs. Parsley said.
Mrs. Post was married in 1917 to DeWitt Post, who died in 1966. Her son, Harold D. Post, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Carrie R. Dail of Harbinger, N.C., and Mrs. Parsley and her husband, Edward, of Providence Forge; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Patrick Willson. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Arrangements are being handled by Williamsburg Funeral Home.
