LANEXA - Gerald James Otey, 87, was received into his heavenly Father's arms Nov. 17, 2009.
Gerald was born in the Greensprings area of James City County, where he was a lifelong resident.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille Hazelwood Otey; a son, Gerald J. Otey, Jr., and his wife, Gail; a granddaughter Aimee Otey Potash, and her husband, Chris; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Sidney Otey and his wife, Nellie; and many nieces and nephews.
Early in life, Gerald worked 17 years as a Game Warden for the state of Virginia. He then moved into real estate, first as an agent and then as a developer, and was responsible for developing the last three sections of Chickahominy Haven in Lanexa, Va. As a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa, Gerald served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon and on the Board of Trustees. Gerald was also a member of Chickahominy Lodge #286.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, at Liberty Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Building Fund, Liberty Baptist Church, 15810 Liberty Church Rd., Lanexa, Va. 23089, or to the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, 3135 Forge Road, Toano, Va. 23168
