Betty Jean Westfall Otey, 82, a long-time resident of James City County, died Monday, April 23. She was a former member of Smith Memorial Baptist Church and currently York River Baptist Church.
She had been employed as a cashier for the Williamsburg Pottery for 22 years. The love of her life was her family, enjoying crab feasts and spoiling all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph Sterling Otey, Sr. She is survived by her eight children: Cathy Roynested, Joanne Black (John), Joseph S. Otey, Jr., Raymond Otey, David L. Otey (Brenda), Clarence Otey, Nina Garret (Melvin), and Richard "Ricky" L. Otey (Jamie); sisters Dorothy Hicks, Marlene Hazelwood and Nancy Ross; 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Williamsburg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the JCC/Bruton Volunteer Fire and Rescue, PO Box 321, Toano, Va 23168.
