Obituary
Mrs. Toler Ransone Clarke, 87, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Herbert E. Clarke; a son, Lee R. Clarke (Linda) and their children, Mindy Douglas, Chase Staples and Elly Underwood; daughter, Susan Clarke Young, her daughter, Brittany and son, James; sister-in-law, Irene Ransone; nieces, Gayle Proctor Williams Cohen (Kel), Eileen Proctor Rowe (Mark); nephews, Russell C. Proctor (Pat), H.A. Randy Ransone (Bonnie), John E. Ransone (Ellen), Gerald Ransone (Diane) and their families; numerous cousins and many friends.
A native of Goochland County, she moved to Richmond after high school, where she was voted the prettiest and most popular girl in her class. She took classes at RPI (now VCU), worked at the Federal Reserve Bank and did volunteer work at McGuire Veterans Hospital. Shortly after marriage, she and her husband moved out of state for 16 years. They returned for seven years before going back to Chicago for eight years, finally returning for good in 1981. She was grateful and proud that she had lived in seven cities in four states, visited most of the other states including Alaska and Hawaii, plus 27 foreign countries, some several times. Wherever she lived, she was active in church, volunteer, civic, sports and social groups or activities. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed participating in numerous other sports and viewing as a spectator. She knew no strangers, loved everyone and it was returned. She was involved in numerous groups and activities in the Richmond area. However, failing health in later years reduced her primary interest to her church, Trinity United Methodist, PEO Chapter M and the Tuckahoe Woman's Club.
The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road, on Friday, March 23, 2:30 to 4:30 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, in Richmond, on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. The family will depart immediately thereafter for the New Kent Chapel Cemetery for a graveside service at 3 p.m.
Afterward, attendees are invited to the Clarke farm nearby, which Toler loved, for a reception in honor of this much cherished lady. The family requests no flowers.

CLARKE, Herbert E. "Doots," 89, widower of Toler Ransone Clarke, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014. He is survived by his son, Lee Ransone Clarke and his wife, Linda, their three children, Mindy, Chase and Elly; daughter, Susan Clarke Young and her two children, Brittany and James; one brother, Milton Stanley Clarke of Mechanicsville; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Born in New Kent County, Va., he attended grammar and high school there. He attended Carnegie-Mellon University while in the military, and later graduated from The University of Richmond. He was a member of the 95th Infantry Division in WWII seeing action in Europe. Twice wounded, he received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, several battle ribbons and a medal he frequently laughed about i.e., The Good Conduct Medal. His entire business career was spent with the former Reynolds Metals Company largely in Marketing and Sales, reaching the level of National Sales Manager in the Flexible Packaging Division. He had assignments several times in Richmond plus Louisville, Detroit and twice in the Chicago offices. He was a member of various fraternal, service and social organizations both in Richmond and other cities in which he lived. He set an example of good cheer, courtesy, civility and old time Southern humility that most of us will never duplicate. The family will receive friends at the Woody Funeral Home- Parham Chapel, 1771 North Parham Rd., Saturday, May 3, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the New Kent Chapel Church.
