Daniel Webb Gardner "Dan" died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Gardner, Sr.; four sisters, Thelma Williams, Frances Williams, Jacqueline Nuttall and Christine Bell; one brother, Delaware Gardner.
Dan is a native of Norge and spent his entire life there. He attended Toano High School and retired in 1990 after 27 years as a policeman for the City of Williamsburg. Dan will be remembered for his loving and generous nature. His family and friends looked forward to and enjoyed his gifts of delicious fresh vegetables from his large garden; fruits, pecans, and fresh seafood. It was in his giving to others that he found the most happiness.
Dan leaves to cherish his memory four loving and beloved children, Karen Lea and her fiance, Todd Clark, of South Hadley, Mass.; Sharon Renee Pullen and her husband, James, of Williamsburg; Daniel Scott and his wife, Sally, of Toano and Susan Starr of Norge; seven grandchildren, Nikki Clark, Jennifer and Rebecca Pullen, Hannah and Hunter Gardner, Amber and Brandi Gardner.
Additional survivors include four brothers, John Gardner, Jr., Henry C. Gardner of Norge, Robert M. Gardner of Gordon, Ga., and Neal Gardner of Gloucester; three sisters, Cornelia Moore of Newport News, Elizabeth Davis of Hampton, and Dale Teagle of Norge, as well as countless nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb, 1, 2006, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at Olive Branch Christian Church. Burial will be private. The family will meet with friends following the service in the Olive Branch Social Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the James City County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 321, Toano, VA 23168.
