NEWPORT NEWS - Lila Janet Gardner, 73, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003. A lifelong Peninsula resident, she was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Hampton. Mrs. Gardner was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to many. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Delaware B. Gardner. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Diane G. Campbell of Norfolk; Marilyn G. Jeffers and her husband, Tom, of Richmond; Carol A. Woody and her husband, Mark, of Newport News; sons, Michael B. Gardner and his wife, Deborah, of Yorktown; James P. Gardner and his wife, Susan, of Newport News; a sister, Evelyn Rinaldi of Virginia Beach; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, in Amory Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Michael Condrey. The family will receive friends following the service at the residence of Mrs. Gardner, 16 Dinwiddie Place, Newport News, VA.

NEWPORT NEWS - Delaware Ballard Gardner, 65, a lifelong Peninsula resident, died Sunday, March 14.
A native of Croaker, he retired in 1974 as a chief warrant officer after 30 years in the Army National Guard. Mr. Gardner was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Hampton.
Survived by his wife, Janet Preddy Gardner; three daughters, Diane G. Grant of South Hill, Marilyn G. Jeffers of Gloucester Point, Carol G. Woody of Newport News; two sons, Michael B. Gardner and James P. Gardner of Newport News; five sisters, Thelma Williams of Richmond, Cornelia Moore of Newport News, Jacqueline Nuttall and Elizabeth Davis of Hampton and Dale Teagle of Williamsburg; five brothers, John Gardner Jr., Henry Gardner and Daniel Gardner of Norge, Robert Gardner of Ark and Neal Gardner of Bena; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Umphlett Funeral Home. Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by the Rev. Michael T. Condrey. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
