YORKTOWN - Carl Robert Higgins, 78, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at Newport Convalescent Center in Newport News. Carl was born on Fort Monroe and had been a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown. He was employed by Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center until 2001 and made the Power of One commercial for the center. He was awarded by the York Jaycees in 1970 and 1973 for founding the Boys Softball League for the Yorktown churches. He also received a National Award for Outstanding Community Leadership and Service at a ceremony in California in 1972. He was a member of the Yorktown Masonic Lodge # 205 and was worshipful master in 1984. He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; two daughters, Teresa Higgins of Concord, N.C., and Cynthia Brown of Newport News; and one granddaughter, Chelsea Vaughan. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thurman Hayes officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Yorktown Road, Yorktown, VA 23690. A masonic service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
