CENTER CROSS - Joyce Mench Gardner, 69, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born in Rock Hall, Md., on Feb. 26, 1932, and attended Rock Hall High School. She received her Virginia Real Estate License in the 1970s and sold real estate in the area for more than 25 years. She was also the owner of Joyce's Fabric Boutique in the late '70s. She enjoyed family, friends, fishing, sewing and shopping. She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Neal E. Gardner; stepdaughter, Dorothy Hundley; step-granddaughter, Shannon Dickens; sisters, Thelma Bigelow of Chestertown, Md., Betty Bigelow of Corsica Hills Nursing Home and Mary Ann Spencer of Elkton Md.; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, one sister and two brothers preceded her in death. She also will be missed by Cocoa, Blackie and Tammy, her faithful companions. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from Olive Branch Christian Church in Norge, Va. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg.

Obituary
WILLIAMSBURG - On Oct. 8, 2007, Neal E. Gardner of Gloucester died in Riverside Hospital, Newport News, Va. after a valiant fight with leukemia. A native of Norge, Va., Neal was a kind, loving, and generous husband, father, brother, and uncle. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He attended Toano High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Prior to his death, he was employed as a Project Superintendent at Clancy & Theys Construction Co. of Newport News.
Neal was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Mench Gardner; two brothers, Delaware and Daniel Gardner and four sisters, Thelma and Frances Williams, Jacqueline Nuttall and Christine Bell.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Shantana Stewart; three brothers, John and Henry Gardner, both of Norge, and Robert M. Gardner of Gordon, Ga.; three sisters, Cornelia Moore of Newport News; Elizabeth Davis of Hampton, Dale Teagle of Norge and countless nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family friends will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Olive Branch Christian Church, Norge, Va. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
