Obituary
HAMPTON - Charles A. Mitchell, known to most as Chuck, 72, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 25, 2008.
He was born to Charles A. and Verna G. Mitchell on Feb. 22, 1936, in Chatham, Va. Moving to the Peninsula at the age of eight, he went on to graduate from Warwick H.S. in 1954 and later DeVry Institute of Technology.
He was a kind and caring individual who never met a stranger; his dry wit endeared him to many. Chuck enjoyed the sport of finding a 'deal' at garage sales and flea markets on things he might need, he could tinker with anything to repair it or give it a new purpose, and he was a devoted member of the 'Hardee's morning bunch.' A member of Parkview Baptist Church for 50 plus years, he taught Sunday School, helped out in the kitchen, and spent a number of years coordinating the audio ministry.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Charles III, and a daughter, Christina.
Continuing his legacy are his loving wife, Anne; daughters, Kathy DeWitt (Warren) of Carrollton, Jamie Mitchell of Hampton, Ginny Handy (Jennings) of Poquoson; son, John Mitchell (Terry) of Goldvein; daughter-in-law, Pat Mitchell of Gloucester; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends.
Chuck's smile and 'Good Morning' greeting (regardless of the time of day) will be missed.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Rusty Beck officiating. Interment will be at Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are being accepted for the Audio Ministry at Parkview Baptist Church, 604 Hilton Blvd., Newport News, VA 23605. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
