ROBERTA BURT KLAUGH
Roberta Burt Klaugh, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, after a long illness. Born in Newport News, she was a lifelong Peninsula resident, where she retired from Hampton City Schools after 10 years working in food services for Jones Middle School, Phillips Elementary School and Kecoughtan High School.
Mrs. Klaugh will be remembered for her love of children. She taught preschool Sunday school for over 21 years at Big Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member. Since her illness, Roberta made her home in Fox Hill with her daughter and son-in- law. She had a deep love for her Lord, her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Klaugh was preceded in death by her husband, William Raymond Klaugh Sr.; her parents, John William Burt Sr. and Mattie Irene Hicks; sisters, Ruth Burt Sparrow and Lillie Mae Sparrow; and brothers, Mercer Burt, John W. Burt and Ernest Burt.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Elizabeth K. and Herman W. (Bunny) Brown of Hampton, William R. and Brenda Klaugh Jr. of Newport News and Joseph H. and Beverly Klaugh of Hampton; a sister, Emma Burt Dishman of Newport News; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Mary Katherine and Tony J. Kromoff, William Allen and Lisa Klaugh, Melody Kaye and W. Scott Lee, Alexis Klaugh, William Alexander (Billy) Klaugh and Crystal Klaugh, all of Hampton, and Karen Marie and Guy S. Ragan of Okinawa, Japan; and seven great-grandchildren, Anton J. Kromoff, W. Edward Klaugh, Kyle S., Kevin A. and Lauren C. Ragan and Preston S. and Jacob P. Lee. She will be missed by two very dear friends, Erma Boone and Roxanne Mertz of Hampton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday at Big Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Bennett Sandford and Dr. Howard Tew. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Children’s Church and/or the Building Fund of Big Bethel Baptist Church, 100 Blackburn Lane, Hampton, VA 23666.
The family of Mrs. Klaugh thanks Dixie Johnson, R.N., and the CNAs of Sentara Hospice Team for their care and kindness shown to their mother during the last month of her illness. A special thanks to Lorelie White, private duty.

HAMPTON – William R. Klaugh Sr., 78, retiree of Newport News Shipbuilding, died Saturday, Nov. 30.
Mr. Klaugh retired in 1975 as a welder after 32 years.
Survived by his wife, Roberta B. Klaugh; a daughter, Elizabeth K. Brown of Hampton; two sons, William R. Klaugh Jr. of Newport News and Joseph H. Klaugh of Hampton; three sisters, Katherine K. Miller and Mary K. Bailey, both of Allentown, Pa., and Dorothy K. Brophy of Bethlehem, Pa.; two brothers, Ralph Klaugh of Allentown and Robert Klaugh of Bethlehem; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service at 2 p.m. Monday in Greenlawn Cemetery by the Rev. Gene C. Fant. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. Peninsula Funeral Home in charge.
