John W. Mayhugh, 83, passed away at home in Warrenton, Virginia, on Monday, July 27, 2015. He was born on September 22, 1931, at Pin Oak Farm, Greenwich, Virginia, to James Lewis and Ella Virginia Mayhugh.He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June Manuel Mayhugh; son, Doug Mayhugh and wife, Janice, of Brandy Station, Va.; daughter, Lisa A. Gargiulo, and husband, Nicolas, of Warrenton, Va.; seven grandchildren, Rebecca L.M. Delaney, husband, Michael, Diane M. Coles, husband, Stewart, Kelly E. Mayhugh, Stacy E. Mayhugh, fianc‚, David Bowser, Caspar A. Velasco, Eva E. Velasco, and Marcus J. Velasco; two stepgrandchildren, Nicolas and Julia Gargiulo; and one great grandchild, Claire E. Delaney.John graduated from Brentsville District High School in 1948. He enrolled in Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1949, and graduated in 1953 with a B.S. in Poultry Science. He was Captain of the Corps of Cadets Regimental Band, "The Highty-Tighties", his senior year. His proudest accomplishment was the winning of the Gold Cup (first place) in Eisenhower's inaugural parade by The Highty-Tighties in January 1953. For two years he served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Bliss, El-Paso, Texas, Fort Belvoir, Northern Virginia, and Thule, Greenland.In 1956 he accepted a position with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service as assistant county agent in charge of the 4-H program in Fauquier County. In 1959 he became an independent agricultural consultant, affiliated with Brookside Farms Laboratories of New Knoxville, Ohio. He worked, doing soil testing and animal nutrition consulting with many farms in Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties. Well known and respected in the agricultural community, he worked in this business until his passing.He was a member of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, served as Elder, Cemetery Trustee, Pastor Nominating Committee and sang in the choir. He was a current member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was lay reader on occasion. He sang with the Warrenton Chorale for 40 years.He was a Captain in the Virginia National Guard and instrumental in founding the National Guard unit in Warrenton. He served on the Warrenton Planning Commission for many years. He served as a board member of the 4-H Center in Front Royal, Va., was a Kentucky Colonel, and an enthusiatic football fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Washington Redskins.He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Margaret M. Powell, and June Mayhugh Smith.The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 30, 2015, from 3 until 5 and from 7 until 9 p.m. at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton.A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Warrenton United Methodist Church.Interment at Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Warrenton United Methodist Church, 341 Church St., Warrenton, VA 20186Online condolences may be made at www.moserfuneralhome.com.
