Obituary
Larry Ross Mayhugh, 72, passed away at his home in Greenwich, Virginia, of natural causes on May 17th. He was born in 1943 in the old Warrenton Hospital, and grew up in Greenwich, a small village that straddles the Prince William-Fauquier county lines. During his youth, he helped his parents and uncles with the Mayhugh's Store business in both Greenwich and New Baltimore. He graduated from Nokesville High School in 1962, and earned his BA from Roanoke College in 1967. Throughout his high school and college years, he was especially known for his athleticism and his prowess at basketball. After college he worked for IBM for several years in the Norfolk area. In the early 1970s he received a phone call from home, asking him if he could return home and help with the business as his father's health was failing; he thought this would be just a temporary move, but life turned out otherwise. He spent his next nearly 40 years running the local country grocery store in Greenwich; dubbed by some as the 'unofficial mayor of Greenwich', he loved seeing his neighbors and customers every day. The area just inside the door near the coffee pot became the local hangout to find out what's going on in the village: people swapped stories, caught up on the important stuff, espoused their political opinions, provided tips on finding the right handyman, as well as tips with managing cattle, and just helping one another. Larry intervened, as needed, to keep the comments on a lighter tone with the politics, but always loved hearing the stories. His own health began to fail in late 2013, and he retired from working the daily operations of the business.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Rae and Gordon Mayhugh, and by his sister, Beverly Gayle Douglas. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Shannon Pierce of Orlando, Florida, and her husband, Ben, and their two children, Connor and Hollis. He is also survived by his brother Gordon Mayhugh, and his children, Michael Mayhugh and Renee Silvestain, and their families; and many aunts and uncles and cousins.

His funeral service will be Saturday morning, May 21st, at 10:30 am at Greenwich Presbyterian Church, with a visitation at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, VA, on Friday from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Greenwich Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the Fauquier SPCA.
