Obituary
JAMES WILLIAMS GREEN FH = GREEN, ANGUS James Williams Green, Jr. James Williams Green, Jr., age 89, died at his residence in Apopka, Fla., on Sunday, December 20, 2009. He was the oldest son of the late James Williams Green and Helen Armstrong Green of Culpeper. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 40 years, Evelyn Gunn Green, also by a sister, Nancy Green Moser and a brother, Andrew J. Green.

Mr. Green is survived by his sons, Edmund M. Green of Orange and James W. Green III of Apopka, Fla. Also by his brothers, R. Duff Green of Orange and Angus M. Green of Culpeper, his sisters Harriet Green Scott and Lillian M. Green of Culpeper, his god-daughter Susan Green Roberson of New York City and a number of nieces and nephews.

"Jim" Green, as he was known in Orange, was a 1941 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and was commissioned as an Army officer in World Ward II with the Coast Artillery, first serving in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. Later in the war, he returned to Fort Benning, Ga., where he trained to become a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division and rose to the rank of captain at age 25. His paratrooper unit took part in the "Battle of the Bulge" at Bastogne, Belgium.

After the war, Jim Green became associated with the American Brake Shoe Company of New York and was assigned as superintendent of the company's manufacturing plant in Winchester, Va. Following retirement from this firm, he moved to Orange and joined his brothers, Duff and Angus, at The Orange County Review for several years.

In 1988, Mr. Green retired a second time and with his wife moved to Florida where they both spent the remainder of their lives. Jim was a Virginia Tech "die-hard" and a life member of that university's "Hokie Club." He was also a life member of the Society of Cincinnati" which is the oldest military society in America. This organization started a program to help needy veterans which later became the first pension system in the United States.

Funeral services for Jim Green will be private and at his request, he will be buried at the National Cemetery in Culpeper.
