Obituary
POMFREY, Temple Vaiden, a lifelong resident of New Kent County, passed away on May 9, 2016, at the age of 98. Temple and his twin sister, Thelma, were born on March 3, 1918, to Simon Augustus and Mary Williams Pomfrey. His older brother, Russell; and sister, Laura, completed the family whose heritage has been centered in New Kent for generations. Temple joined the army in 1942 and served under General Patton in the 10th Armored Division, which marched with the Allies across Europe. In 1947, he married Mary Julia Thompson and celebrated their 64th anniversary before her death in 2011. Temple had a long career at the State Highway Department in Richmond and retired in 1983. He was always happiest working in his garden at home in the country. Mr. Pomfrey is survived by his three daughters, Catherine, Margaret, Mary Ann; son-in-law, Larry Casey; two stepgrandchildren and spouses and two stepgreat-grandchildren. His time on earth has been enriched by the love of a close family that includes many devoted nephews and nieces. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Sandston Baptist Church, 100 W. Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, Va. 23150. The family will welcome visitors an hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the New Kent Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery. POMFREY, Mary Julia Thompson, age 87, of New Kent, Va., died Monday, August 29, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Temple V. Pomfrey; three daughters, Catherine A. Pomfrey of Highland Springs, Margaret A. Pomfrey of Providence Forge, and Mary Ann Casey and her husband, Larry, of Spotsylvania; a sister, Martha Jane Patsel of Hanover; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pomfrey, a 1944 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Florida State University, taught Latin, Spanish and math in Virginia schools for 30 years. Widely known as a traveler, Mrs. Pomfrey led trips to nearly every country in the world. With a strong competitive spirit, she was an active participant for many years both in the New Kent County and the Virginia State Fairs. She was a charter member and past president of the New Kent Woman's Club, a past president of the Ginter Park Garden Club, and a state sponsor of the Virginia Junior Classical League. She was also a member of Sandston Baptist Church, where she taught a ladies' Sunday School class for many years, as well as serving as chairman of the flower committee. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 1, at Sandston Baptist Church, 100 West Williamsburg Road, Sandston, Virginia 23150. Burial will follow in the New Kent Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, the church that Mrs. Pomfrey joined as a girl 75 years ago.
