POMFREY, Temple Vaiden, a lifelong resident of New Kent County, passed away on May 9, 2016, at the age of 98. Temple and his twin sister, Thelma, were born on March 3, 1918, to Simon Augustus and Mary Williams Pomfrey. His older brother, Russell; and sister, Laura, completed the family whose heritage has been centered in New Kent for generations. Temple joined the army in 1942 and served under General Patton in the 10th Armored Division, which marched with the Allies across Europe. In 1947, he married Mary Julia Thompson and celebrated their 64th anniversary before her death in 2011. Temple had a long career at the State Highway Department in Richmond and retired in 1983. He was always happiest working in his garden at home in the country. Mr. Pomfrey is survived by his three daughters, Catherine, Margaret, Mary Ann; son-in-law, Larry Casey; two stepgrandchildren and spouses and two stepgreat-grandchildren. His time on earth has been enriched by the love of a close family that includes many devoted nephews and nieces. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Sandston Baptist Church, 100 W. Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, Va. 23150. The family will welcome visitors an hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the New Kent Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
