Evelyn was a life-long resident of the West Point/King William County area affectionately known as "Mama Carter". Daughter of Clayton Henry Clawson and Katherine Irene "Cassie" Madison. Second wife of Russell Wiley Alexander Carter, son of John Wesley Carter and Susanna Thurston, whom she married on April 4, 1928 in Richmond, VA. Devoted mother of Henry Ellwood, Marian Evelyn, Carroll Eugene, Susanna, Linda Thomas, and Larry Bruce. Loving stepmother of Ruby May, Russell Earl, Alexander, and Milton Lee. Grandmother and great-grandmother of dozens.

Evelyn "Mama" Carter
Evelyn "Mama" Carter, 90, of West Point, Va., died Thursday, May 13, 2003. She was a member of First Baptist Church of West Point where she was active in 55 Alive. Evelyn was also in the Moose Lodge of West Point. She retired from Leggett Department Store after many years of service. Her husband, Russell Carter, three sons, Earl, Alex and Milton, two daughters, Marian and Linda, and two grandchildren preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Ruby and Eugene Jones of Richmond, Susan and John Boughton of West Point; three sons and their wives, Henry and Betty Carter of Mifflinton, Pa.; Carrol and Frances Carter of West Point, Larry and Rose Carter of King & Queen; four sisters, Pauline Robbins of King William, Peggy Dean, Jane Atkins and Faye Clawson of Richmond; 21 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Vincent Funeral Home. Interment in Sunny Slope Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West Point Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Inc., Box X, West Point, Va., or to First Baptist Church of West Point Building Fund, Box M, West Point, Va. 23181.
