From Pam:
hmmm, I will have to look in Moms' stuff to see who Earls' father was. I
just know he was brother to my grandfather, (earls father) James Thomas
Edward Carter Sr. (Edward SR.) out of the dismal swamp of Middlesex County.
The first Carter of our branch in Middlesex County was a wounded confederate
soldier left behind, who never joined back up. They were dirt poor, so poor
Grandpa at six years old wore a shift (what little boys wore until they got
pants, and poor little boys wore for too long) went to school for one day in
his shift and no shoes, and was too shamed to go back. Grandpa was totally
illiterate, could only make his "mark" could not write his own name.
Grandpa was 27 when he married, Grandma was 13.
I believe Mom said this branch of Carters came out of Caroline County
prior to the Civil War.
