Obituary
Gilbert Wilkins Allen, Jr. of Annapolis, Maryland, died peacefully at his home on January 3, 2022 with his wife Shirley by his side. Born December 10, 1931, he was the only child of Amelia House Allen and Gilbert Wilkins Allen, Sr. and was raised in both Washington DC and Nokesville, Virginia.
After attending the former Central High School in Washington, DC, Gil served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture.
Gil was formerly married to the late Mary Graff Allen for 24 years. They lived in Germantown, Maryland during that time; raising two children, Deborah Allen Bennett of Crownsville, Maryland and Wayne Douglas Allen of Hailey, Idaho. Gil was past president of the Germantown Lions Club.
Gill married Shirley Gemignani Allen in 1984 and was welcomed warmly into his new wife’s family, including her two children, Scott Gemignani and Janie Gemignani. During their marriage, they lived in several homes in Anne Arundel and Queen Anne’s Counties.
Gil owned Annapolis Paint Company in Annapolis, Maryland for 25 years, and leaves behind a large community of former colleagues, business associates, and friends. Gil was devoted to community service and served as Exalted Ruler of the Annapolis Elks Lodge and President of the Annapolis Kiwanis Club. During his career, he also worked in sales for Bruning Paint and Sherwin Williams.
Gil enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and boating on the Chesapeake Bay and was a lifelong fan of the Washington Football Team. He was also a Navy Football fan and could be seen in the stands at nearly all home games. Gil had a wicked sense of humor, frequently relaying colorful stories about his time growing up and working on his family’s dairy farm. Most of all, Gil enjoyed spending time with his family.
Gil leaves behind his two children, Deborah and Wayne; grandchildren Aimee Bennett Sath of Millersville, Maryland, David Edwyn Bennett of Potomac, Maryland, and Douglas Lee Allen and Tyler James “TJ” Allen of Hailey, Idaho. He also leaves behind four great grandchildren and a host of loving friends and blended family who will miss him dearly.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Anne Arundel County SPCA.
