Miles Houston Umberger, 78, passed away at his home in Shallotte, NC on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Born to Lillie Whitaker Umberger and Edward Grover Umberger in Tazwell, Virginia on December 26, 1931, Miles lived most of his early life in Bluefield West Virginia. After he graduated from high school, Miles joined the United States Air Force, where he served for 20 years. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1971. He then served as director of finance for the Fairfax County Substance Abuse Services until he retired in 1992.

An avid golfer for most of his life, Miles is a past president of the Brierwood Men's Association. He also loved to travel and through his military service and with friends, visited many countries around the world. Miles also loved music and dancing, and was a Washington Redskins football fan for many years. He loved to write and kept in touch with friends and family through humorous stories sent through email.

For 45 years, Miles was the devoted husband to Audrey House Umberger, who preceded him in death in 2002. His sister, Sarah Umberger Benjamin, preceded him in death in 1990.

He is survived by three children, Tracy Umberger Behringer and her husband, Brian, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania; Miles Scott Umberger and his wife Kim, of Haymarket Virginia; and Lisa Umberger Sublett and her husband, Lewis of Warrenton, Virginia. Miles is also survived by a niece, Belinda Dexter, his dear friend Claire Cheney, and seven grandchildren: Courtney Layne Behringer, Andrew Scott Behringer, Kara Lynn Behringer, Lauren Kelly Umberger, Stephanie Renee Sublett, Patrick Scott Umberger and Tyler Wilson Sublett.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8th in the Shallotte Presbyterian Church.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
