Melvin Hazen Kerlin was the baby son of John Patterson and Charlotte (Sayers) Kerlin. He was the fifth of six children. His siblings were; David Newton Kerlin, Lee Kerlin, Sarah Kerlin, Gladys (Kerlin) McMichael and Mary Kathleen (Kerlin) Abel.

Melvin Hazen Kerlin, the four-month-old son of John P. Kerlin, died Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Kerlin home near Nokesville. Burial was at Valley Church.
