Charlotte Allen (Sayers) Kerlin was born in Manassas, Virginia, to Newton and Annie (Allen) Sayers. She grew up on Massadale Farm with her parents and eight siblings; Mary Hayth, Nettie Hedrick, Minnie Baggott/Houghton, Benjamin, Robert, Blanche Beach, Grace Sayers and Rebecca Herbert.
On January 9, 1901, she married John Patterson Kerlin, son of David and Anna (Bowman) Kerlin.
Together, they raised six children in Nokesville, Virginia;
