John was born in Madison County, Indiana to Wilson and Verna (McCombs) Neal, and they preceded him in death. He married Gladys L. (Burlison) Neal in 1970 and she preceded him in death on November 14, 1998. He retired in 1981 from St. Regis Paper. He was a life resident of Grant County. He was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Gas City, the Sympathy Club of RCA and the Sr. Citizen Bowling Association. He enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Jarrett Fan.

Survivors include daughter, Marilyn (Ralph) Marley, Texas; sons, Jerry (Vikki) Middleton, Van Buren; Rex (Kim) Middleton, Van Buren; grandchildren, Amber, Andrea, Sadie, Ross, Cassie, Troy, Tracey, Jeris, Shannon, Jimmy, and Brady; 12 great-Grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Chance Middleton. 

Note: It appears that Marilyn, Jerry and Rex Midleton are as step-children, children of his wife Gladys Burlison and her first husband Robert Middleton.
