Wesley was the seventh child and fourth son of Henry Shanafelt; and the third child and son of Elizabeth (Ward) Hanaway Shanafelt Reynolds. He was the beloved husband of Mary Amanda (Carter) Shanafelt.

When the Civil War broke out, Wesley Shanafelt enlisted as a Private 3 Jul 1861 with Company F., Keokuk Co., Iowa. 35
