Christian Butner was born in Bethany, Stokes County, North Carolina; son of Adam and Maria Magdalena (Hauser) Butner. He moved to eastern Tennessee in 1826 and to Indiana in 1830. He married Anna R. Pfaff on March 30, 1819. She died March 27, 1842, after 23 years of marriage. He married Barbara House on October 23, 1842 (his obituary reads 1848, but 1842 seems to be correct). After her death, he lived with his children. He was a grocer and had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since April 1834. His obituary indicates that both wives are buried beside him in the Old Methodist Cemetery.
