Obituary
Beloved daughter of Michael and Catherine [Hauss] (House) [Russi] Rusie, 1817 immigrants from Diersheim, Germany who settled in Virginia. In 1836, the Rusie family moved to Mooresville, Indiana where Catherine Ann Miltada met and fell in love with Samuel Shanafelt. They married Dec 24 1850, reared two sons, Henry Carvosso ‘Vos' and Eddy Columbus and a daughter, Sarah Jane ‘Jen'... another baby daughter, Carry, died at birth in 1861. They moved to Texas in December 1877 to join their son Vos. In 1888, she lost her devoted husband to typhoid fever and had to watch as her youngest son Edd, with the help of an Indian, bury him by the side of a trail in Oklahoma. Many believe Samuel is buried in Cottonwood Cemetery because his name, date of birth and death is on the tombstone along with Catherine. A portion of her obituary reads: "She lived a consistent Christian life in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. She was interested in the woman's work and always lent a helping hand. Her smiling face radiated the light of a conscious salvation. To her bereaved children and relatives: You know where to find mother. May her life be imitated by each of you, and may the family tie not be broken around the eternal throne. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."
